As a prominent physician, dedicated to the health and well-being of his patients, it was especially difficult for Dr. Richard Zalar to helplessly witness his beloved wife's decline and ultimate death from Alzheimer's Disease.  Their experience inspired Dr. Zalar to dedicate his life and resources to helping others -- not only those afflicted with Alzheimer's and dementia, but those who love them.

I have written a book about our struggle -- Day Is Ending: a doctor's love shattered by Alzheimer's disease -- with the professional assistance and guidance of Walter G. Meyer. The above film clip is based on that book, and dramatizes the struggle faced by the Zalar family and many families confronted with Alzheimer's and other Dementia diseases.

In 2000 the Governor of Illinois signed Senate Bill 1613, which authorized the establishment of an Alzheimer's Disease Management Care Center in Will County. Since then, Dr. Zalar worked tirelessly to raise the funds needed to make this Center a reality.

We have recently established a relationship with The Stratford at West Clay, and have funded "Trude's House" there.  Click here for further details of this joint venture.

MISSION STATEMENT

It is the purpose of the Gertrude P. Zalar Alzheimer Care Foundation to achieve a level of understanding and care heretofore not always available to those suffering with Alzheimer's Disease and other Dementia-type illnesses. By taking advantage of the latest advancements in Medicine, the Foundation seeks to develop programs to educate and recognize caregivers. Programs, such as the "Gentle Touch Awards" program have been  successful in both the education and recognition of caregivers.  The ultimate goal is to construct a State of the Art Alzheimer Management Care Center.  The overall approach and level of care implemented by the Gertrude P. Zalar Alzheimer Care Foundation will serve as a template for care-giving that could be applied nationally -- and even globally.
